Alright so here's some movies that are worth checking out, with what I think'a them. Course these are just my opinions, the topics open to discussion.

Let's start with the classics, huh? So how bout Grease? It's definitely one of those that you grow up with and learn to love. It's full of great cliches, but that's what we love about it, right I never used to like Grease in High School, because every prep I knew hyped it up, and Inever really got into it until I had the chance to enjoy it on my own. And what can I say? Great music, adorable characters, Johnny T in one of his best roles (though I loved his character in Saturday Night Fever more, an inspiration for Ronnie's family life actually). Though favorite character in Grease? Totally Kenickie. He's hot, what? Totally an inspiration for Rupert's visual design. I love the blonde greasers for some reason cuz they're so nerdy and out of place.

The Outsiders: Never read the book. I suppose my generation skipped that one in required reading in school. So I didn't grow up with it like many others may have. That being said, I'll probably get burned for this one, but I wasn't very fond of it. It was boring, had plot holes, and I really didn't believe the characters. Yes, while they may have been a more realisitic representation of greasers (the rural aspect being something that's often underplayed due to the cliches set by Grease), I found their character interaction to be awkward. The scene with the church and saving the children? That was so random; why were the kids playing in an abandoned church as a field trip to begin with? Anyway, just no.

That brings me to another big let down. James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. Okay, I'm going to get hazed by the older gen, but come on, really? James Dean IS the icon of everything hot and Americana, so I was expecting this one to be a real man-sauna only to spend hours of pussy-faced Dean cry about his daddy issues and adopt some weird, clingy foreign kid who wants Dean and his girlfriend to be his new mom and dad. What is THAT all about? If you're into mommy&daddy drama, you'll love it. But if you're expecting hot men, motorcycles, chrome, and grease, you've rented the wrong DVD.

Cry Baby: You'll either love it or you'll hate it. I LOVED it. I'm not really a Johnny Depp fan, and he's particularly pussy-faced-ugly in this one, but he played a great role as a cliche greaser. The intentional hokiness really did it for me. Great humor, awesome music, and so many wtf scenes. You definitely don't want to expect a lot of high class cinematics or acting, but that's what makes it so funny-corny. The characters are pretty fun, and there's some great costumes here too.

Happy Days: Ahhh, the Fonz. He's like. Johnny, to me. Legendary. You can't replace him. He's very much an inspiration for Galileo, or at least what Leo wishes he was. Talk about a classic; every character is loveable, just. Watch it all, man. There are so many references in this classic that you're missing out if you haven't watched a healthy dose.

American Graffiti: …. I have it! I … just. haven't…. gotten around to watching it yet. …

There are many other movies too that I've yet to see, but let's hear what you think! Anyone seen any of the great hot rod classics?

Rock Odyssey: Produced by Hanna-Barbera and made in '87, it's a classic representation of the rocker life style through the ages. "How could THAT be?" you ask, bewildered by the trippy scene transitions and various drug references throughout the movie. Well that's exactly it. I think it really captures that nasty, grungy retro feel more than any animated movie I ever watched. It's got that 80's animated-rock style to it that reminds me of Rock and Rule, with all the stereotyped love-themes of the 50s, drug-themes of the 60s, groove of the 70s, and willdness of the 80s. Several of Hanna-Barbera's classic toons show up towards the end as well. It's pretty ugly, and really f'd up, but it's worth checkin' out. You can see it free here!

Greaser

Bye Bye Birdie is one of my favourite musicals!  Poodle skirts and greased-back hair galore.  And the movie stars Dick Van Dyke, which gives it an added bonus!!  Also, I've been totally addicted to the fifties styles in Betwitched (found free episodes online!)

Also…this isn't really movie OR greaser related, but I have to say, whenever I'm flipping through the TV guide, I always see what year that night's Cold Case is set in….if it's from 1942 – 65, I'll tune in.  Not otherwise, haha.

Yay Happy Days!  Hahaha, I love just LOOKING at the TV when that's on….

Hahah, oh Cry Baby. Bebe Depp! John Waters lives/or lived in my neighborhood. I didn't really know anything about him when I was younger but I remember being in my local grocery store and my Dad leans over to be and says "Do you know that man over there?" I just blink, being like 6, and reply "Uh no, who is he Daddy?" "Oh! Well that John Waters! He makes movies!" :D

Anyway, living in Baltimore makes me alittle biased but Cry Baby is like the Baltimore version of Grease to me. It's awesome. That stage musical is hillarious, though many critics didn't like it. "Too much like Hairspray" they said. I managed to see it when it had a very brief 3 month stint on Broadway. There's totally a song called "I Kissed Her with Tongue" hahaha.

So if I was born in the greaser era, would that make me a Drape? :D That would have been totally awesome. Too bad my parents are the uppity upper middleclass type so no fun greaser stories from my parents from when they were young. Oh well! I can just imagine! :3

Oh talking about Grease, I agree with you Fyu, Kenickie is one of my favs as well! He's awesome. I'm gunna stop rambling now, lol. If I find any oldie movies with greaser goodness, I'll let you all know first!
