PompFiction is a greaser story set in modern times, following the lives of the five members of the Jaybirds gang as they cope with the loss of their previous leader, Johnny Jay. PompFiction is told through mini series focusing on a certain character or aspect of their life, creating a wide cast of personalities, each with their own unique history.
Disclaimer: Though the comic may display illegal drug use, smoking, drinking, and lewd behavior, I don’t advocate such behavior. While the story is seemingly cute in style, it does contain some adult situations. However adult the situations may be, this is no way meant to glorify the acts of the characters, but rather to show the range of human emotions and capabilities.
Inspiration for the story and characters
Pompfiction was inspired by my own interest in the 50s greaser lifestyle and personas. Galileo was actually revamped from a character I had in 5th grade who had lavender anime hair that stuck straight out, and wore a leather jacket. I later reworked him to still keep the main characteristics, which wound him up with a ridiculous pompadour. I then built up a cast around him, with influence drawn from people like the Fonz, James Dean, John Travolta, as well as real life people I know. Maybe it’s a bit campy, but then again, I like that whole Happy Days feel. Johnny is a mix of every good influence a person could be; the typical hero. Other characters I have based off of social and/or psychological situations I’m familiar with either first hand, or someone or some thing I know.
